Acanthocardia tuberculata - Linnaeus, 1758
Globular form with heart-shaped profile, radial ribs with tubercles more or less pronounced, surface decorated with various colored bands. Sculpture of 18-20 bold ribs and fine concentric grooves and ridges. Two cardinal teeth in each valve, two anterior and one posterior lateral teeth in the right valve, the left valve presents a single anterior and posterior laterals. It lives on sand, mud or gravel bottoms from the intertidal zone to depth of 100 meters; the average life span is from 4 to 7 years . The maximum life span is estimated to be around 11/12 years.
